What They Said

“The bigger the conspiracy, the conspiracy or the plan or the operation, whatever word you want to use, the more difficult it is to keep it quiet and the more difficult it is to actually get away with it.” — Jerry O'Shea, Mission Implausible

The hosts, both former CIA officers, were explaining why ex-spies tend to be sceptical of conspiracy theories. Jerry had just described how much planning it takes simply to arrange one chance meeting with a target in a hotel.

…that would be necessary to pull off one of these Hollywood type heists. You Want control certain elements, but the idea that you can prepare ahead of time to deal with everything that might come your way and changes. And the world's too complex to get away with like really sophisticated heists.

Jerry O'Shea

But another way of saying heist is a conspiracy, right? We will sit down. and conspire, arguably it's the wrong word, but we'll make a plan. And it's not just how to steal something. It's like how to bump into somebody. That could take months. Like a North Korean, I'm just making this up, a North Korean nuclear scientist is going to show up in Geneva. And we know he's coming and we know he doesn't speak English. He speaks Kazakh for some reason and he likes butterflies. So we're like, okay, how are we going to bump into this guy? Well, it can't be an American. It's got to be someone who speaks Kazakh and is a butterfly expert. We either create this or we find this. And then where are we going to bump into them? How are we going to make them put it, put it ease? And so we come up with this little conspiracy or a plan or a heist thing where they all sit around a table and figure this out. And the reason we're not conspiratorial is because we know, again, just to pair with John, just how…

Jim Burke

Yeah.

And the bigger conspiracy, the conspiracy or the plan or the operation, whatever word you want to use, the more difficult it is to keep it quiet and the more difficult it is to actually get away with it. And one last thing on the Hezbollah thing with the pagers, people are like, oh, who would have…

Jim Burke

I mean, they just got... Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's just one of the first times it worked, right? No, it works all the time.
