“Conservation really started out with the 1930s farm bill, and it was really for soil erosion. It wasn't for water quality or all these other benefits. Agriculture evolved considerably as an industry, but conservation delivery didn't. So you still have these programs based on 1930s models, but we have this more modern ag system.” — Hannah Inman, The Prairie Farm Podcast

“The thing I worry about the most is with anything like this. I was thinking about this with electric vehicles. It's the gold rush mentality of vacuum up as much of the resources to complete the project as we know it right now. And then down the road the thing evolves, it becomes more streamlined, more efficient. Well, we used up half or more of the resources we need to do the job anyway in the first iteration, and now we're behind the eight ball.” — Judd McCollum, The Prairie Farm Podcast

“Instead of doing a moratorium or being anti-data center, why don't we make Iowa the place of innovation for data centers? We've already had so much innovation, closed-loop systems using way less water. Why don't we encourage tax incentives for existing data centers to modernize those systems, so that we're not stuck with some of these relics? … They've been in communities for decades and we never felt or heard anything about them until recently. I'm not saying it's not due to real concerns, but it's nuanced like any industry is.” — Hannah Inman, The Prairie Farm Podcast

“I don't know how, moving forward, we don't have data centers. So I don't know if arguing about whether or not we have data centers is really productive. What should we be doing? We should be finding out what this means for our community. If they're making an investment in water, why would we not use that to rebuild our water infrastructure in a way that works for us? It's the newest revolution and we're not going to stop it, and we all have to admit that.” — Hannah Inman, The Prairie Farm Podcast

“I live two miles away from a data center. The other night we were around the fire pit with all of our neighbors and someone was saying, 'these data centers, we've got to keep them out.' And I'm like, you realize we live two miles away from one? 'No, we don't.' Yeah, we do. That's what paid for the park, the high school facilities, all of that. They didn't even realize.” — Hannah Inman, The Prairie Farm Podcast

“He told me, 'Listen, we don't even see a blip on the radar with these hyperscalers.' They called them data centers at the time. He goes, 'I'll tell you where I do see it, and I could use your help: if people would stop watering their lawns five days a week in the summer, that would be really helpful.'” — Hannah Inman, The Prairie Farm Podcast
