JS Jeremy Strong On On with Kara Swisher

“I fear that it's going to take a Hiroshima Nagasaki type event for everybody to wake up. And I fear that that will be the reckoning for us to find accountability. But clearly, these people elude accountability and deflect accountability and are, in a sense, post-accountability.”

“I fear that it's going to take a Hiroshima Nagasaki type event for everybody to wake up. And I fear that that will be the reckoning for us to find accountability. But clearly, these people elude accountability and deflect accountability and are, in a sense, post-accountability.” — Jeremy Strong, On with Kara Swisher

Kara Swisher closed by asking Strong and Aaron Sorkin what "reckoning", the word in their Facebook film's title, means for tech and AI. Strong says the film itself may be a cultural reckoning. He fears the real one will be a catastrophe brought on by what he calls the "Promethean fire" we're playing with.

I don't understand why that's better than the setting off bomb system that we had before.

Kara Swisher

What? Exactly. Jeremy Strong word on reckoning.

Jeremy Strong

I shouldn't have the last word in this interview, so we should give it back to Aaron. But, you know, I don't have a great answer to that. You know, I mean, perhaps this film is a form of that reckoning, you know, a cultural reckoning. I fear that it's going to take a Hiroshima Nagasaki type event for everybody to wake up. And I fear that that will be the reckoning for us to find accountability. But clearly, these people elude accountability and deflect accountability and are, in a sense, post-accountability. You know, I played Donald Trump's mentor in a film a few years ago who was sort of the progenitor of fake news and misinformation and had no conscience whatsoever and no shame. And we see everything he believed in coded in everything our president does. And so a lot of these things have been with us before social media and are endemic to us as human beings. But I fear that the reckoning, unfortunately, might be a catastrophic event that is brought about by this Promethean fire that we are all really unwisely playing with.

Kara Swisher

Well, that's well said. And I think you guys have done an amazing job of this. And one of the things that's really important is to, as you said, Jeremy, is to put, I think more than a painting, it's a mirror. And they need to see themselves over and over again. At some point, it may sink in…
