BT Boris Tane On devtools.fm: Developer Tools, Open Source, Software Development

“The bottleneck is on review because, hey, we cannot just YOLO to prod. I think that is the result of one, distrust in the tools. People don't trust that code written by the models is better than code written by people, which is very questionable in late 2026… I don't think I write better code than a model if given the right instructions.”

Tane's first prototype found production bugs, fixed them and deployed straight to production. "The world is absolutely not ready for that," he said, so Polylane now opens pull requests instead, which moves the bottleneck to code review.

So you mentioned a lot of particular scenarios where an agent can step in and make a PR. So like this one you just discussed is like CI

…reviews happening in the industry right now. And this is like a kind of interesting case because this would be like something that potentially happens after hours where it may be hard to get a review anyway. And curious about like what you've seen in the space and how your customers are using this.

Boris Tane

Yeah. Yeah. So when I started in March, The very first prototype I built actually did not submit the pull request. It was working only on Cloudflare and Vercel, and it will deploy to prod, right? It will find the problem, fix it, deploy to production because those platforms you can deploy via API. Just deploy to prod and let's go. Like problem is fixed. You don't even need to worry about it. The world is absolutely not ready for that. That's why, you know, we are adding the step of, hey, you still got the PR. You can still kind of look at it yourself. But that is, I really don't like this word that people are using a lot, bottleneck, but that is just shifting the bottleneck, right? Like it used to be that, oh, engineers are expensive, so we don't have that much code. The problem is we have feature requests, we have web reports, but nobody can fix them. Now that is gone, and the bottleneck is on review because, hey, we cannot just YOLO to prod. I think that is the result of one, distrust in the tools, right? Like people don't trust that code written by the models is better than code written by people, which is very…

Yeah, I think it's really that there's like an extra thing there that's missing. Like in my AI development journeys, I've found that getting PR deploys to be as close to prod as possible is like very important for me to be able to merge things with confidence. And I can imagine in a Polylane…

Boris Tane

Yes. So this is a use case that keeps coming up over the past two months. Today, Polylane kind of treats your preview environments as low priority and you kind of have to map. Manually ask the agent, go and check these preview things. It's not going to automatically treat it as it's treating…

Speaker 4

Yeah, I think even in the isolated context of like Polylane itself has suggested a fix to potentially like something that would have triggered on call or some, you know, some production error. If you have some deeper validation step, maybe being able to test it. Although really the problem with a…
