LL Luke Lafreniere On The WAN Show

“There's really interesting stuff happening in what I'm calling the hardware hacking space… when there's this much crazy hardware out there because manufacturing is shifting more and more to the high end, specifically enterprise, the scrappiness that is coming out of that is actually really cool… I don't think it's over with the 170 and the BC250. I think we're barely starting.”

Context

After joking about an eBay listing for a data-center rack of GPUs, Luke argued that surplus and salvaged enterprise hardware is spawning a hobbyist hacking scene, from pulling memory chips off dead cards to repurposing old mining boards.

…it was. I thought it was interesting because we have talked about the great reselling that is eventually going to happen with all this AI hardware and how cool that is going to be, combined with all the advancements that will be made in local models in the meantime. I'm pretty excited about it.

Yeah.

Luke Lafreniere

Yeah. There's really really interesting stuff happening in the what I'm calling hardware hacking space, but I don't think it has really a name yet. But the whole, I've talked about it a billion times on WAN Show October the CMPHX 170s, the BC250s, all that type of stuff. But it's also interesting with like with Micron pulling out of the consumer memory market and not making certain chips for these old cards before, how people are just taking cards that have like dead cores or useless cores for some reason and plucking memory modules off them and using it for other things and stuff. Like people are when there's this much crazy hardware out there because the manufacturing is shifting to more and more and more high-end and enterprise specifically enterprise. The scrappiness that is coming out of that is like actually really cool.

The amount of financial incentive there is to pursue scrappy software. Find a way to

Luke Lafreniere

do something with this crazy high-end is huge. Yeah. And it's, it's, I don't think it's not only do I not think it's over with the 170 and the BC250, I think we're like barely starting.

Linus Sebastian

We're going to go parabolic on like just cool, scrappy stuff that you can do with this enterprise hardware.
