“Mistakes of omissions are much worse than mistakes of commission because if you do a deal that you shouldn't have done, you lose your money, but if you don't do a deal that you should have done, maybe you lost 100x the money or 200x the money that you could have made.”

Absolutely. And then, I mean, I've gone through it because my first 12 years in venture, I wasn't in a traditional partnership. And generally speaking, my partner has added zero value to my deals, zero. Negative value to the decisions because.

Turner Novak

So how does that play out in practicality? And

Oren Zeev

you know, there's another actually interesting insight that most people don't think about. Our business, as you know, our business is not symmetrical. Mistakes of omissions are much worse than mistakes of commission because if you do a deal that you shouldn't have done, you lose. Your money, but if you don't do a deal that you should have done, maybe you lost 100x the money or 200x the money that you could have made. And your partners, even if they happen to be smart, and even if there's no internal politics, which is two very big ifs, they are never going to push you to do a deal that otherwise you would not have done. They would push back against deals that you want to do. And the thing is, even if they are right nine out of ten times, it's enough that one time because of they pushed back, you couldn't do a deal that you wanted to, and that deal was 100x, that the whole thing wasn't worth it. You know, that you would have been better off doing the nine deals that they, the bad deals that they, thanks to them, you didn't, and but you missed one…

Turner Novak

who's never been in that role before and they let's say you suddenly are like plopped into a venture partnership and there's like 20 people. What does your day usually fill up by that a founder might be like, oh, I didn't know that you had all that going on?

Oren Zeev

Well, I'm not even talking about the, you know, the fund maybe doesn't care, although they should, because you have less time to also help him. But there's so or her, but there's so many things. You know, first of all, every investment that you do make, including the ones that you couldn't deliver…

Turner Novak

definitely have days like that as a solo GP. I'm like, I'm just not really that excited or anything right now.
