“Not particularly spicy hot take, I think no power on this earth makes vibe coding safe but everything is a spectrum in that regard.” — Josh Triplett, The Stack Overflow Podcast

Triplett, asked whether Rust makes vibe coding better and safer. He goes on to say Rust's constraints get an AI agent to working code faster, and that vibe coding is only defensible for throwaway code that's really just a way of solving a problem.

…of Python but if you ask it for like a program of various specific types it will often give you 500 lines of Rust that by the time it hands it to you it definitely compiles it's definitely warning free it's definitely properly formatted all of these different things so it steers things a little bit

Ryan Donovan

so you mentioned the the sort of yolo mode do you think rust makes uh vibe coding better and safer

Josh Triplett

so not particularly spicy hot take i think no power on this earth makes vibe coding safe but everything is a spectrum in that regard and if you're building code you just truly don't care about and you're going to throw it away in 30 minutes when it's giving you the answer that you want there is a degree to which rust makes it more constrained you're not going to deal with a crash you're not going to get like imagine a world without rust where you need uh the ai to write some low-level program you're going to end up with it what invoking a debugger inside the agent sandbox and trying to figure out the seg fault or the race condition if you're trying to single shot something or run it in an agent loop then rust is going to get you there faster and that is the one case I would say that vibe coding is kind of defensible, where it is you are not actually setting out to write a program. You are setting out to solve a…

Ryan Donovan

Yeah. I mean, I think that is going to be for a lot of people one of the results of AI is that code's going to happen. There's going to have custom software and they're not going to have to think about it.

Josh Triplett

Yeah, exactly.

Ryan Donovan

So you mentioned the security aspect. Obviously, that is a huge part of AI code. What do you think Rust can do there?
