“We're assuming a world where multiple satellite constellations will be interoperable. Just like on the terrestrial world, you're switching from one network to another seamlessly, depending on what's available… The aggregate capacity of our different systems, if we make sure we're developing them with the same standards, will mean that we will deliver the best end-user experience without having to duplicate assets in space, but augment each other's assets in space.”

Context

Asked about interoperability between terrestrial and on-orbit networks, the guest said roaming between satellite operators, not only between phone networks and satellites, is the next challenge for the industry.

…also, the word that comes to mind is interoperability between terrestrial networks and on-orbit networks. So tell me a bit about that interoperability as a requirement moving forward. And also what still needs to happen for that kind of, I suppose, ideal interoperability to be achieved.

Speaker 1

…switching from one network to another seamlessly, depending on what's available. We want to do the same on the satellite world. And for multiple reasons, we want to do that. Because one of the reasons is because together we are stronger. We can provide a better service. So by being able to have multiple international and national satellite operators that can deliver this 5G network from space, the aggregate capacity of our different systems, if we make sure we're developing them with the same standards, will mean that we will deliver the best end-user experience without having to duplicate assets in space, but augment each other's assets in space. So that interoperability challenge is not yet being looked at in a deep enough level by the terrestrial community because they're not facing those issues on the terrestrial world. And this new ecosystem we're building is going to be bringing those new challenges. So that's challenge number one we need to address on this interoperability between satellites, operator A and satellite operator B…

Maria Varmazis

Yeah, and as you were describing that second challenge, I couldn't help but wonder if this also means that satellite operators need to think about resilience and reliability in ways that maybe they hadn't considered before.

Speaker 1

Exactly. And that's one of the biggest value we're bringing by not having a vendor-locked single operator model, but this interoperable architecture. It means that now, whether you're government or public protection disaster relief, emergency services, or various commercial applications, you have…

My last question is just about the MSSA and their role in developing this architecture and helping the industry move to where it needs to go. Just I'm curious about how you see its role in helping things develop.
