Andrii Gerus, asked what Ukraine's grid looked like before the war, on why it was so exposed to attack. He said the country's strategy now is distributed generation built on solar, wind and battery storage.
Thank you for coming to Kiev. Thank you for coming to Ukraine.
So now we're going to talk about what has happened to the energy system and how you've responded. But we need to take a step back because this was a Soviet energy system until fairly recently. Could you describe what it was like before the war?
Yeah, you're right. We have a Soviet-style energy system. We try to change it, but we still have some kind of such system because our four biggest generation units produce more than 60, 65% of all our electricity. And our top 10 substations of our transportation system operator Kornerho, they transport more than 60% of all electricity. That's why Russia tried to attack the biggest generation units and the biggest substation. And we had a lot of problems because of that. So now we try to change our architecture, to change our energy model in order to build more distributed generation. And obviously it is, and it will be based on renewables, on green energy. I mean, solar, wind, battery storage. This is our main goal and this is our strategy.
Give us a sense of the geography, not of the country, which we have a sense of that and it's very big and we know where it is. Everybody, I think, has been watching the news, we know. But in terms of the energy, Energy, where are your big sources of supply, sources of demand? And also, energy is…
So, historically, we had some big industries like metals and mining, chemistry, as they need a lot of energy from electricity, also from gas. If you're talking about chemistry, we also have big agro, so we have quite big potential for biomass, for biogas, for biomass. We have quite good potential…
Okay, so that gives a snapshot of, and you've talked a little bit about where it's going because of the war, but I see it as being lots of agriculture in the west, lots of industry in the east, lots of sun in the south, wind pretty much everywhere. So, a lot of resources, not necessarily quite…
