What They Said

“This is the 63rd consecutive report in which they see a reduction in the size of death row. And now it's about 1,950. So for the first time in several decades, we're below 2,000 people on death rows in the United States.” — Abraham J. Bonowitz, The Prison Show

Bonowitz is reporting on the latest Death Row USA update, a regular count of everyone on death rows in the country. He offers it as a positive trend in a segment otherwise about upcoming executions.

I am all right. It is Friday night, and glad to be with you all. Can you hear me okay?

Dani Allen

Absolutely.

All righty. Well, I was just grateful to be in a position this week to do my part on the fun drive. And I'm glad to hear my name mentioned, Ermer, as one of the people that's donated. So I'm going to just invite everybody to join me at 7135265738, option one to donate because we need to keep this community radio station going and this show going. I'm glad to be a part of it. So thank you. I'm in Bondo and Death Penalty Action. And we oppose every execution anywhere in the country and everywhere else too. But in particular, our focus is on the death penalty in the United States. And you can find petitions for every execution that is scheduled at deathpenaltyaction.org. We're winding down the year. Not quite done yet. There's another slew of executions coming up in November. If you join us on Sunday evening at 9 p.m., we're going to get into detail with each of the cases of the people that are scheduled. But I'm going to talk a little bit about them. But first, let me just share some numbers. We are now…

Dani Allen

Thank you, Abe. Have a great weekend.

You too.

Bye-bye. This is KPFT Houston. And big thank you to Carrie. Big thank you to Carrie. All right, you know what Linda has? I have a hundred dollar bill, guys, from Danny and I. And we want to find somebody to match it. How about that?

“What our government is about to do in executing him is make him a martyr and therefore give him what he wants, which is to inspire others to similar action, which is why we should not be carrying out that execution. Just let him die in prison and nobody will remember his name.” — Abraham J. Bonowitz, The Prison Show

Bonowitz is discussing an upcoming Texas execution of a man convicted of a mass shooting he describes as religious extremism carried out to become a martyr. He stresses that nobody is asking for the man to be freed.

…that? I don't think so. So that's part of the situation that we have. And now we're going to start to look at what happens in December. So December 1st, got another execution scheduled in Florida. And then, of course, December 3rd, the Fort Worth shooter, the guy that shot up, killed 13 people and wounded 32 in an act of religious extremism and terrorism with the intent of becoming a martyr. And what our government is about to do in executing him is make him a martyr and therefore give him what he wants, which is to inspire others to similar action, which is why we should not be carrying out that execution. Just let him die in prison and nobody will remember his name. And that's as it should be for such a person who's done such a despicable act. We're not taking away from his humanity, but he, you know, nobody is suggesting that this person be freed. What we're asking is that we don't make him a martyr. So I've been in Killeen, which is the place where Farthard is, looking out for the places where we'll be carrying out execute, or protesting the execution.…

“It's pretty outrageous that they're executing people who went through something they recognize as abusive and experienced what we know is the common thread among most of the people that end up being executed, which is abuse, neglect, and addiction at childhood.” — Abraham J. Bonowitz, The Prison Show

Bonowitz is walking through upcoming Florida executions. He notes two of the men scheduled attended a state reform school that Florida shut down after a federal investigation and later paid reparations over.

…who attended that school ended up on death row in Florida, if you can imagine that. The school was shut down after a Department of Justice investigation because of the abuse that was suffered by most of the people that attended. And in fact, last year in 2025, the state of Florida ended up paying reparations, compensation to people who went through all that. And I say this because, you know, it's pretty outrageous that they're executing people who went through something they recognize as abusive and experienced what we know is the common thread among most of the people that end up being executed, which is abuse, neglect, and addiction at childhood. And that's really, you know, if you haven't seen David Dow, Professor David Collingsworth TED Talk about how we're people who are for the death, probably and against the death, probably what we have in common where we meet, it's the corner where no murder takes place at all. And how do you prevent murder? By catching people before they fall through. So heads up on that. Anyway, we've got nine…

“There have been over 600 executions in Texas, and the Board of Pardons and Paroles looks at every one of them and they have recommended clemency exactly five times and it's been granted exactly three times.” — Abraham J. Bonowitz, The Prison Show

Bonowitz of Death Penalty Action is talking about how the next Texas governor could change who sits on the state's clemency board. He argues the board has acted mainly as a gatekeeper that keeps mercy requests off the governor's desk.

…impacts on the rate of executions in our country and in those states. I'm especially hopeful that if Gina Hinojosa is able to win, and I'm not advocating or telling anybody how to vote, vote your values. But if we change to a Democrat governor, let's hope that she actually appoints a Board of Pardons and Paroles that will give rule and consideration to the people who apply for clemency. There have been over 600 executions in Texas, and the Board of Pardons and Paroles looks at every one of them and they have recommended clemency exactly five times and it's been granted exactly three times. There's more people than that that are worthy of mercy and it needs to be a complete and wholesale change to the makeup of the Texas Board of Pardons and Parole so that there can be fairness and not just a gatekeeping entity to keep these opportunities to show mercy off the governor's desk. So we're watching for that in Ohio. We now anticipate that Amy Atkin will be the new governor and that…
