LS Liron Shapira Liron Shapira Host of Doom Debates, the #1 show for high-stakes debate about AI extinction risk.

“Look, the main reason GPT doesn't kill everybody is because it can't. Like simple as that. Even if it tried its hardest right now, it can't quite do it. It doesn't have quite enough intelligence for whatever reason. … But Sam Altman is like declaring victory, or it's like saying, look, I have this baby tiger and we've managed to restrain the baby tiger from slashing everybody to death. It's like, right, because it's just, it's not even that good at slashing yet.”

Context

Liron is reacting to remarks from Sam Altman and Satya Nadella on how hard AI alignment is. Altman's point, as Liron reads it, is that alignment has been easy so far and will get harder. Liron argues that current models are only contained because they are not yet capable enough to do harm.

…I mean, that's a kind of a vague thing for me to say. And I'm not sure it would stand up to scrutiny. But I think that's part of the problem here is there is such a robust, just natural ecosystem for the creative use of this stuff and the Creative use of this stuff can bring tremendous sorrow. Yep,

yep, yep.

Here, let's go to Satya. Okay, so Sam Allen was kind of mealing mouth saying he thought it would be harder. And I guess so far, I guess the best sense I can make out of Sam's comments is that he thinks that there's like a continuous line. So he's like, hey, look, the alignment problem today of making GPT not kill everybody has been so easy. But to me, that sounds disingenuous because it's like, look, the main reason GPT doesn't kill everybody is because it can't. Like simple as that. Even if it tried its hardest right now, it can't quite do it. It doesn't have quite enough intelligence for whatever reason. Probably related to the reason why it can't 100% do everything I ask it in terms of the coding that I want it to do. The same reason it gets a little bit stuck there is probably related to the reason why it can't single-handedly plot how to take over the world robustly yet. But Sam Almond is like declaring victory, or it's like saying, look, I have this baby tiger and we've managed to restrain…

You could say they're both just talking their books. I mean, back when it looked like Microsoft was going to have this alliance with Open AI, Microsoft is reassuring us everything was going to be okay. I mean, the CTO or whatever his title is now, Kevin Scott, very nice guy, very sincere guy. He…

Liron Shapira

Yeah. Some context also in terms of Microsoft's 180 here. In 2023, I posted a clip from Kevin Scott. I believe he's still the CTO of Microsoft, or at least he was at the time. And he was very dismissive. His quote was something like, look, I know how this technology works. I know how the cloud…

Robert Wright

Yeah. So like what else? Did much else happen? I mean, yeah, I got a couple.
