JM James McDonald On Dive Club 🤿

“I'm still trying to figure that out. There was this mind switch when I was building this where I was quicker to actually design the thing using Claude rather than jump back into Figma. … I still advocate for designing in Figma. I'm one of these designers that just automatically jumps into high fidelity, I never really liked wireframes.”

Context

The host asked when McDonald reaches for Figma and when for Claude, since they are very different workflows. He says he is unsure: some sections were faster to build directly in Claude, though he still defaults to Figma for exploring directions.

…sort of evolve that process a lot quicker for me it does anyway you know I think like it really does just help evolve the idea and and try and build out different examples of that idea that you might have inside Figma so yeah that's kind of that's kind of like how I like to think about it you know

…when are you Prone to really go deep in Figma versus when are you prone to exploring Claude or maybe like sweat the details of like a final thing in Claude? Like, I think that's my main question at this point. It's like, when are you because it's two very different types of workflows, you know?

James McDonald

For sure. I think I'm still trying to figure that out, you know? And there was this like, there was this definitely this like mind switch like when I was building the design for this and Claude. Let me just show you the, I think it was one of these feature sections. In fact, it might have been these. There was this weird like mind switch that happened where I was quicker to actually design the thing using Claude rather than jump back into Figma. And that's like, you know, I've not had that sort of weird fork in the road moment yet, you know. I think like designing in Figma 100%, like I still, I still like advocate for, you know, like, I think like just even from like the inception of getting like the copy or getting like the content for the website. Yes, you could like quickly do that in a wireframe or whatever. But I'm like one of these designers that just like automatically just immediately jumps into like high fidelity. You know, like I never, I never really liked using wireframes. I never really liked building or putting out a sort of wireframe. Like I think there's like interesting ways you could do that now. Like…

of the high level shape though. Like that's my takeaway from looking at this. Yes. You're not going as far into some of the details that maybe I would have expected you to in the past. Yeah.

James McDonald

Because maybe you're needing more space to

figure that out in Claude. Is that accurate? And
