Cynthia Kaiser of Halcyon's Ransomware Research Center was asked about AI call-center tools her team tracked on criminal forums. She says the significant change is voice fraud at scale, in the victim's language.
…the most important thing about that is a lot of them are provided for free at first, right? It's the free trial model. It's like, you know, you have the basic model for free and then you pay for the upgrades. It feels almost like an Amazon marketplace. And you can go and just buy what you need.
One of the other things that caught my eye was you tracked some AI call centers where folks can buy that kind of service.
Yes. The AI call center bit was really interesting. You know, there's a difference between now AI makes it a lot easier to lie. We're all tracking that. It makes it a lot easier, right? It makes it a lot easier to call somebody up, have information about them, or just, you know, use a deepfake, et cetera. But being able to do that at scale is a lot more interesting. So what we found is in particular, one forum advertised an AI-powered outbound call center. It plugged into real phone system software and it called targets in real time in 25 languages using that target's actual name. And it would support 120 simultaneous calls. And it even produced those ambient sounds of a real call center. So mouse clicks and keyboard noises. Those are what we all have in our heads, or at least in the back of our heads, is like looking for something that's real on the other end. And it claimed to be trained on over 130,000 customer service calls. And I think what's really interesting about that is it's a big shift that now AI can conduct the phone call itself in real time in the victim's language using their real name while simulating those ambient sounds.
So it sounds like we're really seeing the ongoing lowering of the bar in terms of technical requirements to get into these sorts of illicit businesses.
Yes, it's a little like you have novices and they can just go to a storefront. You don't have to know a guy to know a guy anymore to be able to buy these tools. It doesn't mean you know how to use them or know how to use them well. We continue outside the scope of the research we did here. We just…
