Lorre was explaining why making Young Sheldon without a studio audience gave him more freedom. He described the traditional multi-camera sitcom as a relentless need to make a live audience laugh, and this is his picture of what that pressure looked like on a taping night.
I don't think that's the big macro oversea vision of things. I don't have that. You know, the wonderful thing about young Sheldon was how does his family adapt?
Yeah.
And again, we really learned this as we were making the show, Steve Malero and I, that the real story there was his twin sister who was just a kid, you know, and his older brother who is, you know, not terribly bright, you know, and working class parents and a deeply Christian mother. How do they respond to having this extraordinary once-in-a-lifetime genius in their home in East Texas? That was the story. And that was a story worth telling. And the fact that we shot it film style, you know, we were granted a lot more freedom in terms of the relentless need to make a live audience laugh is what the four-camera world is. It is relentless. If you've been doing this long enough, you've seen on many occasions network executives and company executives coming running out of the green room going, that didn't get a laugh. What are you going to do? What are you going to do? That didn't get a laugh. You got to fix that. That laugh, I heard, I know, I saw. I'm here as well. I know it didn't work. We're going to change it. It was a maniacal need or fear that if the audience wasn't constantly laughing, they'll change the channel.
Now for a quick break, but don't go away. When we come back, Chuck talks to me about the evolution of the Big Bang Theory,’ pilot. The first one missed the mark, and he guarantees you'll never see it. And why Charlie Sheen's character was key to the message of two and a half men. Okay, be right back.
