What They Said

“In Van Halen's heyday, on their tour rider, they said: in the green room we need a big jar of M&Ms and we want all the green ones picked out. Everybody's like, that's the height of total rock and roll debauchery. No — they did that for a reason. Their rider included all of this really important health and safety stuff, pyrotechnics and stage safety… So if they got to the green room and they see green M&Ms in the bowl, you can't do the fire. Those little non-sequiturs are my Van Halen green M&Ms.” — Brad Frost, Whiskey Web and Whatnot

Frost has his coding assistant end every response with three random emojis and an absurd sentence — a retired comet filing a formal complaint against the concept of Thursday — because he kept finding it had silently ignored his instructions file. The non-sequitur is a cheap tell that it actually read the settings. He had just found a bug where starting a session in dictation mode dropped his configuration entirely.

…like continues to like, yeah, like Robbie. It's like, I'm interacting with you, and I think that you're, you know, who I am. And then it's like, I'll get like a couple rounds into it. I'm just like, very clearly, you're not paying attention. Do you know the story of like the green MMs in Van Halen?

Robbie Wagner

No.

Brad Frost

So in Van Halen's heyday, on their tour rider, they said, in the green room, right? We need a big jar of MMs and we want all the green ones picked out. So the green room, bowl of MMs, no green ones in it. And everybody's like, that's just like the height of total rock and roll debauchery, right? No, they did that for a reason because their rider was included all of this really important health and safety stuff. They have like pyrotechnics and stage like safety stuff and all of that stuff. So if they got to the green room and they see green MMs in the bullets, you can't do the MMs, you can't do the fire. Yeah. Yeah. So that was their way of ensuring kind of quality, ensuring that people are following the rules. So those little non-sequiturs are my green MMs, my Van Halen green MMs.

Robbie Wagner

Funny. I just did that when I was testing local LLMs because I wanted the local LLM to, which is just LLM. How many times are we going to say that over and over again? Anyway, I wanted to handle basics. Like I'm not going to use the code. I wanted to use it to like, hey, what's my whiskey wish list…

Brad Frost

And that gets to the conundrum of, it's like, here's developers used to, you know, striving for aiming for predictability, reliability, like this thing. Yeah. You just set it on a cron job and it's going to just run forever. And then it's like, here you go, just like, just falling on its face. And…

Robbie Wagner

do you have anything you've recently vibe coded you can share with us that's just sort of fun and silly? Or maybe you're planning and just fun little viewports into, because like I'm just really curious, design systems, they're not done yet. You know, like there's a lot of things in this world that…
