What They Said

“I just think everyone's going to still buy into this because everybody is buying a story more than anything else. … I think investors will look at this and say, all right, we're going to be wrong about one of these, but we need to take the basket because the basket as a whole is going to be extraordinary for us. And if one of the groceries falls to the floor and splats like a tomato, we'll take that hit.” — Dan Primack, Big Technology

Kantrowitz asked how investors should square Anthropic's huge future compute commitments with buying into the IPO. Primack says it should be hard but won't be: institutions' clients would be outraged to miss it, and he puts it in the same story investors bought with SpaceX and will buy with OpenAI.

…is changing and more rapidly than any other industry we've ever seen right usually you know you you hope for small growth quarter after quarter year over year the year over year numbers are like become irrelevant for a company like this like what like what anthropic did in 2025 honestly who cares

Alex Kantrowitz

…like the the sort of determination of how to what box to put them in how you think about it when so much of the action is going to happen next year and the year after and the year after that um and like you said if they're going to move money to go invest in this company um how do you square that

Dan Primack

…leave other things And I understand, you know, the market goes up, so you don't necessarily always have to rotate completely. But I just think everyone's going to still buy into this because everybody is buying a story more than anything else. And it's the same story, arguably to some extent, they bought with SpaceX. And I think it's the same story they'll buy next year with OpenAI. And I think investors will look at this and say, all right, we're going to be wrong about one of these, but we need to take the basket because the basket as a whole is going to be extraordinary for us. And if one of the groceries falls to the floor and splats like a tomato, we'll take that hit.

Alex Kantrowitz

Yes. And it's

too early to know which one

Dan Primack

that's going to be. And it's not going to be because of some of the numbers we're seeing today.

“No, because I don't think Oppenheimer went public.” — Dan Primack, Big Technology

Kantrowitz had just read out the S-1 risk factor warning that advanced AI could pose "catastrophic or existential risks to humanity," and asked whether any S-1 in history had contained a sentence like it. Primack adds that Anthropic isn't really trying to resolve the tension before listing, and probably can't.

…by the way, I love when you read it, and I'm going to paraphrase this, but it's kind of like, you know, that's that's a concern internally and externally. We could end humanity as we know it, which could impact our financial performance. Yeah, no shit. That could impact your financial performance.

Alex Kantrowitz

…and security measures, pose catastrophic or existential risks to humanity, particularly if such systems were misused, replicated, weaponized, or allowed to operate with a high degree of autonomy. Dan, in the history of financial reporting, has there ever been a sentence like that in an S1?

Dan Primack

No, because I don't think Oppenheimer went public. So no, I don't know. No, no, no, nothing like nothing like this. And there was a lot, I will say, there's been a lot of commentary over the last, what it's been, two months since the Coxon thing came out about, well, you know, they're going to have to resolve this issue before they go. Is that possible? Well, whether possible or not, clearly not. They're not even really trying to. And that's not even a knock on them. I don't think they can. But no, this is going to be in there. And again, whether you invest in the IPO or whether you are invested in the IPO or not is not going to impact or change the fact that Anthropic could or could not destroy the world, which will, again, render the rest of your portfolio meaningless.

Alex Kantrowitz

How does Anthropic's performance here trickle to OpenAI?

Dan Primack

I mean, if at all. I mean, it will, right? Because it's the most direct comp. I mean, SpaceX is kind of a comp, and depending on how you want to suss out the meta piece of it, but I mean, this is the most direct one-to-one, right? These are essentially the same company. Again, SpaceX has Starlink…

Alex Kantrowitz

two. Okay. You closed your newsletter with plenty of companies flip their S1s and then get cold feet. Anthropic can't afford to be one of them in terms of both its balance sheet and its reputation. Just elaborate on that.
